Europe After the COVID 19 pandemic: EU air traffic again slightly below the 2019 level in 2023

Following the coronavirus pandemic, EU-wide air traffic recovered visibly in 2023. At around 717 million, the number of passengers transported was still 5% below the 2019 level.

98.1 million people flew from Germany in 2023. However, the number of passengers transported was still 21% lower than in 2019, the year before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. At that time, 124.4 million passengers took off from German airports.

In other EU countries, however, the number of passengers carried has increased. Portugal recorded around 7 million more passengers in 2023 than in 2019 (+23%). In Poland, around 2 million more passengers took off in 2023 than in 2019 (+7%) and in Spain around 6 million more passengers boarded in 2023 (+4%).
