Europe COVID 19 pandemic: Sharp decline in EU air traffic

The outbreak of the corona pandemic has led to a sharp drop in EU air traffic. Approximately 39 million passengers departed from German airports in 2021. This compares with 124 million in 2019. The number of passengers transported decreased by 68%.

The downturn was similar in other EU states. In 2021, Spain recorded 77 mn fewer passengers than in 2019, while passenger figures in France (-58 mn) and Italy (-57 mn) were also down 58% and 59% respectively on the previous year's figures.

The latest data on EU air passengers can be found in the Eurostat database. Further data on air traffic in Germany can be found on the national website in the transport section.
