1 The energy dependence shows how an economy is dependent on imports to fulfill its energy needs. It is calculated as net imports divided by the gross available energy. Countries that export more than they import energy have negative values. Gross available energy is a calculated value, defined as: Primary production + Recovered & recycled products + Imports – Exports + Stock changes.
