Europe Organic farming

Sustainable development

The proportion of agricultural land designated to organic farming is slowly increasing within the EU. 25.7% of Austria's agricultural area was assigned to organic farming in 2020, making it the leading EU Member State in this field. In Germany the share was significantly lower. In 2022, 9.8% (around 1.6 million hectares) of its agricultural area was organically farmed. This was slightly above the EU average of 9.1% in 2020. The study includes areas under conversion as well as those which have been fully converted.

However, organic livestock is still very much a niche market in the European Union. According to estimates for the year 2022, only 1% of pigs and 7% of cattle in the EU were farmed organically.
