Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to bring about a fundamental improvement in the living conditions of all people today and for future generations, as well as to protect planet Earth. To measure the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 231 globally comparable indicators was developed, which are to be filled on the basis of national data.
Data for Germany and descriptive information on the indicators have been made available in a prepared and interactive form on the online platform for the indicators of the UN Sustainable Development Goals since July 2019.
Indicator set of the EU Commission
Under the leadership of Eurostat, an EU SDG indicator set was developed in 2017 to measure sustainable development in the European Union. This set measures progress towards achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at European level and consists of around 100 indicators structured according to the 17 goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030.
Data on selected indicators are provided for all member states in the Eurostat database.
German Sustainable Development Strategy
The Federal Government has committed itself to implementing the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 at the national level. This resulted in the Federal Government revising the national sustainability strategy and adopting it in January 2017. The indicator report of the Federal Statistical Office includes the indicators for measuring the achievement of the goals of the German Sustainability Strategy. This is updated every two years.
Data on the sustainability indicators at the national level as well as descriptive information have been provided in a prepared and interactive form on the online platform for the indicators of the German Sustainability Strategy since February 2020.
Sustainable development strategies of the Länder
In addition to the Federal Government, the majority of the Länder have their own strategy for sustainable development. Some Länder governments have aligned their strategies with the Global Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, while efforts are being made by other Länder to adjust or draw up their own sustainable development strategy.
