Causes of death Number of deaths has fallen by 1.6% in 2019

A total of 939,520 people died in Germany in 2019, of whom 465,885 were men and 473,635 women. This means that the number of deaths has fallen by 1.6% compared to the previous year. As in the previous years, the most common cause of death in 2019 was cardiovascular disease. It accounted for 35.3% of all deaths. Of the 331,211 people who died from cardiovascular disease, 152,615 were men and 178,596 women. The second most common cause of death was cancer. Roughly a quarter of the deceased (231,318) died from cancer in 2019; 125,191 of them were men and 106,127 women. Malignant neoplasms of bronchus and lung (lung and bronchial cancer) were the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men (27,858 cases). Regarding women, the most frequent cancer causing death was breast cancer (18,519 cases).
