The gender pay gap describes the pay gap per hour between women and men. There may be different causes. For example, women work in lower paid occupations, or obtain management positions less often than men. Some women receive less money from their employer even if their job, educational path and employment history are similar to those of their male colleagues. A distinction is made between the adjusted and unadjusted gender pay gap.

6 March 2023 New “gender overall earnings gap” indicator broadens the perspective of earnings inequality

The gender pay gap is regarded as the central indicator of earnings inequality between women and men. Earnings inequality does not only refer to gross hourly earnings, however. There will be earnings consequences in the medium to long term if people work only part-time or do not participate in economic life at all. As a new indicator of extended earnings inequality, the “gender overall earnings gap” takes account of several dimensions. In addition to the pay gap per hour worked, it makes differences visible in the number of monthly hours worked and paid (gender hours gap) and the labour market participation of women and men (gender employment gap). The gender overall earnings gap was 39% in 2022 as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) to mark Equal Pay Day.
