09/04/2025 - The volume of taxes collected by the Federation, Länder and municipalities (territorial authorities) in Germany amounted to a total of 947.7 billion euros before tax redistribution in 2024. This was an increase of 32.0 billion euros (+3.5%) from the previous year.
Joint taxes accounted for the largest proportion (719 billion euros, +4.1%). These are taxes whose revenue accrues to several territorial authorities. The highest-yielding joint taxes were turnover tax (including import turnover tax) with a revenue of 302.1 billion euros (+3.7%) and wage tax with 248.9 billion euros (+5.4%). As far as purely federal taxes were concerned, it was energy tax that achieved the highest revenue with 35.1 billion euros (–4.3%). The highest-yielding municipal tax was trade tax with 75.3 billion euros (+0.2%), whereas the tax on acquisition of real estate yielded the largest revenue at Länder level with 12.7 billion euros (+4.5%).
The tax revenues remaining after redistribution amounted to 374.9 billion euros for the Federation (+5.3%), 394.8 billion euros for the Länder (+3.2%) and 145.5 billion euros for the municipalities (+1.4%). Tax revenues of 32.0 billion euros (–9.7%) were transferred to the European Union.
