30 November 2022 Criminal prosecution by the courts in 2021: convictions by final judgment down 5.3%

In 2021, the courts in Germany convicted approximately 662,100 defendants by final judgment. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decrease of roughly 37,200 defendants convicted, or 5.3%, compared with the previous year. The downward trend in the number of convictions observed for a number of years thus continued.

Parental custody awarded to both parents in 96% of divorce proceedings

In nearly all cases of divorce (96%) in 2013 involving joint minors, parental custody was awarded to both parents (63.425 proceedings) because neither of the parents had applied for sole custody under Section 1671 (1) of the German Civil Code.
