6 April 2023 Number of passengers up 29% in regular bus and rail transport in 2022

The number of passengers travelling short and long distances in regular bus, coach and rail transport was considerably higher in 2022 than in 2021, the year which was strongly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Passenger numbers rose by 29% to nearly 10.2 billion in 2022 compared with the previous year, as is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional results. The figure was however still 14% lower than in the pre-crisis year of 2019. Particularly high increases on the same period a year earlier were seen in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarter of 2022. It was within these two quarters that the 9-euro ticket could be purchased during a three-month period, and its successor, the “Germany ticket” or “49-euro ticket”, is to make public short-distance passenger transport more attractive from 1 May 2023 on a permanent basis.
