Based on the final results of the 2011 census of buildings and housing, the dwelling stock in 2016 was structured as follows: most of the dwellings in Germany (25%) consisted of 4 rooms. The percentage share of dwellings with 3 rooms was just under 22%, that of dwellings with 5 rooms was 17%.
The ranking of dwellings by number of rooms was the same in the former territory of Germany, in the new Länder and Berlin, and in Germany as a whole. However, the percentages showed a higher proportion of dwellings with 4 rooms (29%) and 3 rooms (27%) in the new Länder.
