In the German Bundestag, only 35.3% of the members of parliament are currently women. According to the global ranking of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), this means Germany is ranked 47th.
In recent years more and more women have entered parliaments worldwide. According to the IPU, on a global average, 26.8% of all members of parliament are currently women. Rwanda is the leading country with a female representation of 61.3%. Cuba (55.7%) and Nicaragua (53.9%) are the only other countries where women are also currently in the majority. In the parliament of the West Asian country of Yemen, men are among themselves. In the European Union, the parliaments of Sweden (46.4%) and Finland (46.0%) have the highest quotas of women, and the lowest in Cyprus (14.3%) and Hungary (14.6%).
International Women's Day has been celebrated on March 8 for over 100 years. It commemorates the year 1911, when women began to demonstrate for their right to vote and their political participation.
