International statistics Female parliamentary representation: global ranking 2025

Only 35.7% of the German Bundestag is currently made up of women. According to the global ranking of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), this means Germany is ranked 44th.

In recent years more and more women have entered parliaments worldwide. According to the IPU, on a global average, 27.2% of all members of parliament are currently women. Rwanda is the leading country with a female representation of 63.8%. Cuba (55.7%), Nicaragua (55.0%) and Mexico (50.2%) are the only other countries where women are also currently in the majority. In the parliament of the West Asian country of Yemen, there are no female representatives at all. In the European Union, the parliaments of Finland (45.5%) and Sweden (45.0%) and have the highest quotas of women, whilst Cyprus (14.3%) and Hungary (15.2%) have the lowest.

International Women's Day has been celebrated on March 8 for over 100 years. It commemorates the year 1911, when women took part in major demonstrations for their right to vote and participate in politics.
