Press release No. 145 of 15 April 2025
WIESBADEN – 282,290 people died in Germany in the 1st quarter of 2025, according to extrapolated figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Mortality figures had exceeded the median of the four previous years since the end of January 2025, which coincided with a comparatively high incidence of respiratory diseases (only in German) ("flu wave"). At the start of the year, the death figures were still well below the median of the comparative years (Week 1 from 30 December 2024 to 5 January 2025: -9%), but they exceeded this value at the end of January. In the whole of January 2025, the mortality figures were therefore around the median of the years 2021 to 2024 for that month. In February 2025, the number of deaths was considerably higher than in the four previous years, with the difference from the comparative value amounting to +9% in that month. Figures decreased slightly in March 2025, the difference from the comparative value was still +5%.
