WIESBADEN – In 2024, slightly more than 1.0 million people died in Germany, according to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The number of deaths therefore decreased by 2.5%, or roughly 25,500, compared with the previous year.

The Federal Statistical Office provides more information on the current evaluation of mortality figures on its "Deaths, life expectancy" webpage. From the reference year 2025 onwards, the Federal Statistical Office will only publish press releases on death figures every quarter rather than every month as was previously the case. The next press release containing death figures for the 1st quarter of 2025 will be released in mid-April 2025. The Statistical Report on death figures by day, week and month (only in German) will be updated every week again from 11 February 2025 onwards. The publication will be suspended until then due to conversion work.
