WIESBADEN – The European Commission is considering to impose high extra duties on electric car imports from the People's Republic of China. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that Germany imported a total of 129,800 purely electric-powered passenger cars to the value of 3.4 billion euros from China in 2023. Compared with the previous year, imports of Chinese electric cars therefore tripled in terms of numbers and value. In 2022, Germany imported 43,200 purely electric-powered cars to the value of 904.0 million euros from China. When measured in terms of units, imports of Chinese electric cars rose as much as tenfold compared with 2020. In 2020, just 12,800 purely electric-powered cars to the value of 115.2 million euros were imported from China. In the first four months of 2024, the number of electric cars imported from China decreased markedly in this vehicle category due to subdued domestic demand. Nevertheless, Chinas share of the total German imports of electric cars increased considerably once again.
