Wholesale selling prices, January 2024
-2.7% on the same month a year earlier
+0.1% on the previous month
WIESBADEN – In January 2024, the selling prices in wholesale trade were 2.7% lower than in January 2023. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the change on the previous year was -2.6% in December 2023 and -3.6% in November 2023. Compared with the previous month, wholesale prices in January 2024 increased slightly for the first time since September 2023 (+0.1%).
Decline in prices of mineral oil products
As in the previous months, mineral oil products were primarily responsible for the year-on-year decline in wholesale prices. In January 2024, prices in the wholesale of mineral oil products were down 7.2% compared with January 2023, and had dropped 1.6% from December 2023. Lower year-on-year wholesale prices were also recorded for grain, unmanufactured tobacco, seeds and animal feeds (-20.3%), chemical products (-16.3%), metals and metal ores (-12.7%), and waste and scrap (-6.4%).
By contrast, the wholesale prices of fruit, vegetables and potatoes (+11.8%) and sugar, confectionery and bakery products (+7.0%) were higher than in January 2023. The prices of beverages (+6.5%) and tobacco products (+5.1%) were also up at wholesale level in January 2024 compared with a year earlier.
Methodological notes:
The indices of wholesale selling prices will be rebased to 2021 as of reference month April 2024. First results for the new base year will be released in May 2024.
