Persons in employment resident in Germany, August 2023

WIESBADEN – Roughly 45.8 million persons resident in Germany were in employment in August 2023. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment rose by 34,000 (+0.1%) on the previous month. In July 2023, the month-on month increase in the number of persons in employment was somewhat smaller (+17,000 people, or 0.0%), in June 2023 their number rose by only 2,000 (0.0%).
Without seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment in August 2023 was up by 64,000 (0.1%) on July 2023. The typical seasonal increase was therefore somewhat larger than in August 2022 (+55,000 people).
Stable upward trend year on year
Compared with August 2022, the number of persons in employment in August 2023 was up by 0.8%, or 342,000. In May, June and July 2023, the year-on-year change rates amounted to +0.7% each, while they had stood at an average +1.3% in 2022 due to catch-up effects following the Covid-19 pandemic. The long-term upward trend on the labour market therefore continued also in the summer months of 2023, though with relatively little momentum.
Adjusted unemployment rate at 3.0% in August 2023
According to results of the labour force survey, 1.43 million people were unemployed in August 2023. This represented an increase of 74,000, or 5.4%, compared with August 2022. The unemployment rate rose to 3.2% (August 2022: 3.1%).
Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed stood at 1.33 million, which was an increase of 4,000 people, or 0.3%, on July 2023. Compared with the previous month, the adjusted unemployment rate in August 2023 remained at 3.0%.
