WIESBADEN – Roughly 45.7 million persons resident in Germany were in employment in July 2023. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the seasonally adjusted number of persons in employment increased slightly by 15,000 (0.0%) compared with the previous month. In June 2023, the number of persons in employment remained almost unchanged from the previous month (+1,000 people; 0.0%).

Without seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment in July 2023 fell by 23,000 (-0.1%) on June 2023. The decrease was therefore less marked than in July 2022 (-51,000 people).

Stable upward trend year on year

Compared with July 2022, the number of persons in employment was up by 0.7%, or 333,000, in July 2023. In both May and June 2023, the year-on-year change rates also stood at +0.7%. In a year-on-year comparison, the long-term upward trend on the labour market therefore remained constant in July 2023.

Adjusted unemployment rate at 2.9% in July 2023

According to results of the labour force survey, 1.33 million people were unemployed in July 2023. That was a decrease of 144,000 people, or 9.7%, compared with July 2022. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.0% (June 2022: 3.4%).

Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed stood at 1.29 million, which was a decline of 5,000 people, or 0.4%, on June 2023. Compared with the previous month, the adjusted unemployment rate remained at 2.9% in July 2023.
