Press Mortality figures in June 2023 close to the median of the previous years, at +2%

Press release No. 277 of 11 July 2023

WIESBADEN – 76,630 people died in Germany in June 2023, according to extrapolated figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This corresponds roughly to the 2019 to 2022 median for that month (+2%). An examination of individual calendar weeks reveals, however, that the mortality figures in Week 25 (19 to 25 June) differed by +7% from the corresponding comparative value. According to the Robert Koch Institute's weekly report on heat-related mortality, the nationwide weekly median temperature simultaneously exceeded the threshold above which additional heat-related deaths can be expected. According to data of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (German weather service), June 2023 was the second hottest June in Germany since records began. Coinciding with lower temperatures towards the end of the month, mortality figures fell below the median of the previous years (-2%) in Week 26 (26 June to 2 July).
