Press Number of income millionaires in Germany up 4.6% in 2019

  • Approximately 27,400 taxpayers had an income of one million euros or more
  • Income millionaires earned an average annual income of 2.7 million euros
  • Concentration of millionaires highest in Hamburg and Bayern and lowest in Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen

WIESBADEN – In 2019, a good 27,400 of all registered wage and income tax payers in Germany had an income of at least one million euros. This equates to an increase of 4.6%, or just under 1,200 additional million-euro earners, compared with 2018. Income from a business establishment was the main source of income for 15,900 (58%) of these taxpayers, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Another 5,400 (20%) received their income mainly from dependent employment and 4,400 (16%) from self-employment. Other types of income only played a minor role. As regards income from capital, it has no longer been possible to provide complete data since the introduction of the final withholding tax in 2009.
