Press Timber logged remaining at high level - 78.7 million cubic metres in 2022

Press release No. 150 of 14 April 2023

  • Smaller amounts of spruce wood and damaged timber logged thanks to reduced insect infestation
  • Amount of timber logged for energy production increasing significantly (+17.3%)

WIESBADEN - In 2022, a total of 78.7 million cubic metres of timber was logged in German forests. The amount of timber logged dropped by 5.1% from the record high of 83.0 million cubic metres seen in 2021, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This was mainly due to the fact that the volume of damaged timber was down by 11.6% to 44.7 million cubic metres (2021: 50.5 million cubic metres). Nevertheless, the volume of damaged timber remained on a very high level as in the four preceding years. After the record year of 2020when 60.1 million cubic metres of damaged timber had been logged, the volume decreased for the second time in a row.
