Press Building permits for dwellings down 6.9% in 2022

Press release No. 095 of 10 March 2023

  • Number of approved dwellings at 354,400, down by 26,300 on a year earlier - lowest level since 2018
  • Negative development accelerating in the course of 2022
  • Especially large decrease for single-family and two-family houses

WIESBADEN - In 2022, the construction of 354,400 dwellings was permitted in Germany. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of dwellings was down by 26,300, or 6.9%, on 2021, when 380,700 building permits were granted, the highest number reached since 1999. The most recent year in which the number of building permits was lower than in 2022 is 2018 (346,800 dwellings). The figures include building permits for both dwellings in new buildings and new dwellings in existing buildings. The number of building permits is an important early indicator of future construction activity as building permits represent planned building projects. The federal government has the goal of providing 400,000 new dwellings per year in Germany in the medium term. Material shortages and high costs of building material, skilled labour shortage in construction and worsening financing conditions, in particular, have probably contributed to the decline in the number of building projects in 2022.
