Press Meat production down 8.1% in 2022

  • Slaughterhouses produce 7.0 million tonnes of meat, which is 1.3 million tonnes less than in record year 2016
  • Year-on-year decrease in pork and beef markedly larger than for poultry

WIESBADEN – Meat production in Germany fell sharply in 2022. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that commercial slaughterhouses produced 7.0 million tonnes of meat in 2022, according to provisional results. This was a decline of 8.1% or 0.6 million tonnes compared with the previous year. Domestic meat production thus decreased each year since record year 2016 (8.3 million tonnes), though never as much as in 2022. A total of 51.2 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses as well as 701.4 million chickens, turkeys and ducks were slaughtered in the slaughterhouses in 2022.
