Press release No. 050 of 8 February 2023
- The quantity of cigarettes taxed has more than halved since 1991
- Separate data on water pipe tobacco available for the first time: 962.6 tonnes taxed in 2022
WIESBADEN – In 2022, 65.8 billion cigarettes were taxed in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decrease of 6.0 billion, or 8.3%, compared with 2021. The decrease was markedly larger than in the preceding years (2021: -2.8%; 2020: -1.1%). One of the reasons for the sharp decline probably was the tobacco tax rise that took effect on 1 January 2022. Sales of cigars and cigarillos, too, were down by 8.9% to 2.5 billion. The quantity of fine cut tobacco taxed rose slightly by 0.9% to 25,080 tonnes year on year, despite the tax increase. This is probably due to the fact that hand-rolled cigarettes made of fine cut tobacco are cheaper than manufactured cigarettes and are often used as an alternative.
Basic data and long time series are available in table Taxation of tobacco products: Germany, years (73411-0001) in the GENESIS-Online database.
