WIESBADEN – After rules regarding the promotion to the next grade had been modified in the first school year following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of children and young people repeating a grade rose significantly again in school year 2021/2022. A total of 155,800 pupils either repeated the grade voluntarily or had not been promoted to the next grade in the previous school year. Their number was up by 62,700, or 67%, on school year 2020/2021 and by 12,200 (8%) on school year 2019/2020, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
