WIESBADEN – Regularly eating fruit and vegetables is an important part of a balanced and healthy diet. Consumers, however, had to pay considerably more for such food products last year than a year earlier. To mark the Green Week agricultural fair (20 to 29 January), the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the consumer prices for vegetables increased by 10.7% in 2022 compared with the previous year. In contrast, fruit prices rose much more moderately, by 3.0% compared with 2021. For comparison: consumer prices as a whole increased by an average of 7.9% in the same period. Overall food prices showed an even steeper rise (+13.4%) in 2022 compared with a year earlier. The prices of meat and meat products increased by 14.6% in the same period.
