Press 2.9% more people employed in the health sector in 2021

Press release No. 033 of 26 January 2023

  • 6.0 million people employed in the health sector at the end of 2021
  • Strong staff growth in 2021, mainly due to the recruitment of additional personnel to fight the pandemic
  • Number of nurses in hospitals, out-patient and (part-time) residential care facilities almost unchanged

WIESBADEN – The number of people employed in the German healthcare system increased more significantly in the pandemic year of 2021 than in the first Covid year of 2020. A good 6.0 million people were working in the health sector at the end of 2021, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that is 169,000 more than at the end of 2020. The number of persons employed rose by 2.9% in 2021, which was a larger increase than in 2020 when their number went up by 1.4%. The greater increase was due to the number of additional staff recruited to fight the pandemic, for example in contact tracing of infected people and in Covid-19 testing and vaccination centres. Contrary to the overall trend, the number of nurses in hospitals, out-patient and (part-time) residential care facilities remained nearly unchanged.
