Press Autumn sowing for 2023 harvest: areas under winter rape up 7.6%

Area sown with winter grain nearly unchanged year on year

Press release No. 562 of 22 December 2022

WIESBADEN – In autumn 2022, agricultural holdings in Germany sowed winter rape on 1.2 million hectares of arable land for the coming 2023 harvest season. The area sown with winter rape exceeds the area cultivated with winter rape in May 2022 by 81,900 hectares (+7.6%), according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Hence the amount of land under winter rape continued to increase after a strong decline due to adverse weather conditions in 2019. The cultivation of rape became more attractive for agricultural holdings lately in view of higher market prices on account of Canada’s a very bad harvest in 2021 and the war in Ukraine. In addition to that, the amounts of winter rape harvested in the 2022 harvest season turned out to be robust in many regions despite periods of heat and drought.
