  • Approximately 595,300 households received housing allowance at the end of 2021; the highest proportion of households depending on housing allowance was found in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • Average monthly amount received by households where all members were entitled to housing allowance rose by 15 euros year on year
  • Housing allowance expenditure up 7% to roughly 1.4 billion euros

WIESBADEN – Approximately 595,300 households in Germany received housing allowance at the end of 2021. They accounted for 1.5% of all main residence households. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of recipient households declined by 3.7%, or about 22,900, compared with a year earlier. At the end of 2020, roughly 618,200 households had received housing allowance.
