WIESBADEN – In 2018, 11.4 million taxpayers in Germany stated donations of 6.8 billion euros in their tax returns. These were new all-time highs but the level of donations rose only slightly (+0.9%) compared with the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The actual number of people who made donations was even higher as jointly assessed couples are counted as one taxpayer. In Germany as a whole, 39% of taxpayers stated donations in their tax returns. The median donation was 125 euros. This means that half of the taxpayers donated less or exactly 125 euros while the other half donated more. In 2017, the median donation had been 122 euros.
