Press Energy consumption in transport down by a fifth in 2020

Covid-19 pandemic leading to lower energy consumption for all transport modes

Press release No. 510 of 2 December 2022

WIESBADEN – Transport was responsible for a good fifth (21.4%, or 2,562 petajoules) of German energy consumption in 2020. Energy consumption in transport thus dropped by 18.4% compared with 2019, when it had accounted for nearly a fourth (24.1%) of total energy consumption, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This was a decline of transport induced greenhouse gas emissions by 43.3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents (-18.5% to 190.5 million tonnes altogether). The main reason for the decline is the Covid-19 pandemic. In the years 2014 to 2019, total energy consumption in transport had risen by 5.7%.
