WIESBADEN – The number of cars in Germany is rising despite the public debate on a mobility transition. Car density has risen continuously in the past ten years. There were 580 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2021, which is a record high. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority and its own calculations. In 2011, the car density had been 517 for all of Germany. The car density went up because the number of cars registered in Germany increased more strongly than the population in the period under review.
