Press release No. 415 of 30 September 2022
WIESBADEN – There are approximately 10.2 million hectares of wooded area in Germany, according to the first comprehensive structural survey of forestry holdings conducted in 2022. 4.4 million hectares, or 43% of the wooded area, are owned by roughly 760,000 private owners. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that some 3.3 million hectares of Land forest (32%) are managed by the respective forest administrations of the Länder. 2.2 million hectares (22%) of the wooded area have been allocated to bodies governed by public law (for example special-purpose associations and municipalities). The federal forest accounts for only 310,000 hectares (3%), which is by far the smallest portion of Germany’s total forest area.
