WIESBADEN – Summer school holidays ended on 9 August in Nordrhein-Westfalen, which is the first Land where school has started. At the beginning of the new school year, demand for teachers has been in the focus of public attention again. In school year 2020/2021, schools of general education in Germany employed just under 702,000 teachers in primary employment, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). 279,000 teachers worked part-time, which is just under 40%. The part-time employment rate thus reached its highest level since 2011, when it was 39%. There were just under 513,000 female teachers and 189,000 male teachers. The high proportion of women cannot be the sole explanation of the part-time employment rate. 47% of the female teachers worked part-time, but as many as 19% of the male teachers, too.
