WIESBADEN – In 2021, the public prosecution offices completed approximately 4,880,000 criminal investigation proceedings. This was a decrease of 2.3% compared with a year earlier. Roughly 80% of the investigation proceedings were initiated by police stations and then forwarded to the public prosecutors, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The remaining proceedings were instigated by the public prosecution offices themselves or were initiated by tax or customs investigation offices or administrative authorities.
