WIESBADEN – In 2021, 200,300 people were undertaking doctoral studies at institutions of higher education in Germany. This was an increase of 8,000, or 4%, compared with 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the percentage of women among doctoral students was 48% (95,100) and that of men 52% (105,200) in 2021. In 2020, the relation of women to men had been 47% to 53%. The average age of doctoral students was 30.2 years. 45,600 doctoral students (23%) had foreign citizenship.
