Press Short-distance trains in the 2nd quarter of 2022: Transport performance more than doubled

Press release No. 333 of 5 August 2022

  • Passengers in short-distance rail transport travelled more than twice as many kilometres as in the 2nd quarter of 2021
  • Passengers up by roughly three quarters in short-distance rail transport year on year
  • Growth in tram transport more moderate (+48%)

WIESBADEN – The number of passengers and transport performance in public short-distance passenger transport markedly increased in the second quarter of 2022. This is shown by a provisional ad-hoc evaluation of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The analysis covered data from transport enterprises that use automated passenger counting systems and whose data had been quality checked at the time of analysis. The number of passengers travelling short distances by rail, including commuter trains, was up by 46% on the first quarter of 2022, and by 74% on the second quarter of 2021. The increases are probably due to the easing of Covid-19 related restrictions and the 9-euro ticket available since June.
