WIESBADEN – On reference day 3 May 2022, 22.3 million pigs were kept in Germany, according to provisional results. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was the smallest pig population since German reunification in 1990. At the time, 30.8 million pigs were kept. Compared with the livestock survey (reference date 3 November 2021), the number of pigs decreased by 1.48 million, or 6.2%. This was the third marked decrease in a row. Compared with the relevant number recorded on 3 May 2021, the pig population was down by 2.42 million, or 9.8%.
