WIESBADEN – Substances affecting the climate have an impact on global warming and contribute to climate change. The strongest greenhouse gas known is sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), whose greenhouse potential is about 23,500 times the climate impact of carbon dioxide (CO2). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that German enterprises purchased a total 743.2 tonnes of the substance in 2021, which is 10.0 tonnes more than in 2020 (+1.4%). The purchased quantity of SF6 corresponds to 17.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents (Global Warming Potential, GWP).
