WIESBADEN – Roughly 5.1 million people in Germany were employed in the public service in 2021 (as at 30 June 2021). To mark the Public Service Day on 23 June 2022, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that, based on provisional results, this was an increase of 125,600, or 2.5%, compared with the previous year. It was the highest year-on-year increase since German reunification. As a result, approximately 11% of the persons in employment in Germany worked in the public service in 2021. Large increases were recorded in the healthcare system, schools and higher education institutions and, as in the previous year, in the police and child day care centres.
