Press release No. 243 of 14 June 2022

Wholesale selling prices, May 2022
+22.9% on the same month a year earlier
+1.0% on the previous month

WIESBADEN – The selling prices in wholesale trade were 22.9% higher in May 2022 than in May 2021. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the year-on-year increase in wholesale prices was somewhat lower than in April 2022 (+23.8%), which saw the highest rise in prices since the beginning of the survey in 1962. Compared with the previous month, however, wholesale prices increased by 1.0% in May 2022. Just as in April, the impact of the war in Ukraine on wholesale prices was observed in May 2022 especially in wholesale with raw materials and energy sources, but also in wholesale with food products.

The high annual rate of change for wholesale prices mainly derives from increased prices for raw materials and intermediate products. The largest impact on the annual rate of change in May 2022 had the price increase in wholesale trade with mineral oil products (+63.5%). The high price increase in wholesale trade with solid fuels (+76.7%), grain, unmanufactured tobacco, seeds etc. (+46.0%) as well as with metals and metal ores (+41.1%) also contributed to the high rate of change in May 2022.
