Press Overindebted people need 38% of their household income for housing costs

For comparison: this percentage is 22% for the total population

WIESBADEN – In 2021, households of overindebted people who sought help at a debt advice centre had an average net income of 1,368 euros per month. Amounting to an average of 520 euros, housing costs including energy and incidental rental expenses accounted for 38% of that household income. Housing costs accounted for as much as 45% when based only on the debtors' own income, which averaged 1,146 euros. To mark the Debt Counselling Awareness Week from 30 May to 3 June 2022, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that overindebted people faced above-average housing costs. According to the most recent data (from 2020), housing costs expressed as a proportion of household income in the total population amounted to 22%.
