WIESBADEN – The Federal Government has set itself the goal of constructing 400,000 new dwellings in Germany every year. In 2021, the construction of 293,393 dwellings was completed in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a year-on-year decline of 4.2% or 12,983 dwellings. After more than 300,000 new dwellings had been constructed for the first time in 2020, the figure in 2021 was down to the level of 2019 (2020: 306,376 new dwellings; 2019: 293,002). The annual increase in the number of completed dwellings, which started in 2011, did not continue in 2021. The figures include construction work completed regarding new buildings and work on existing buildings.
