Press Migration across Germany’s borders markedly down in first year of Covid-19 pandemic

  • Net immigration from EU countries remained stable in 2020
  • Internal migration within Germany decreased just slightly

WIESBADEN – In 2020, the first Covid-19 year, the number of people immigrating from abroad to Germany was down by 24%, and that of people emigrating from Germany down 22%, year on year. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the changes in migration patterns were particularly pronounced among young adults aged 18 to 22: arrivals across Germany's borders were down 32% and departures across Germany's borders down 28%.
