Press release No. N 019 of 8 April 2022
WIESBADEN – Most children in Germany grow up with siblings. To mark World Siblings Day on 10 April, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that just under 10.3 million of the 13.6 million children under the age of 18 lived in the same household as their siblings. More than three fourths of the children (75.4%) grew up with at least one brother or sister. Contrary to what is often believed, the proportion of children living in families without siblings has not gone up in the past 20 years. Their share has been between 24% and 25% since 2001. No distinction is made here between natural, step and adopted siblings; children living outside the household are not covered.
