- Lowest ever number of marriages in the Federal Republic of Germany in 2021
- At the same time, the second Covid-19 year saw the highest number of births in Germany since 1997
WIESBADEN – The number of marriages fell to a new all-time low in Germany in 2021. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), approximately 357,800 couples got married in 2021. This was a decrease of 4.2%, or 15,500, compared with 2020, the first pandemic year, when the number of marriages declined by as much as 10.3% from 2019. It was only during World War I, in the years 1915 to 1918, that an even lower number of marriages was registered in the territory of today’s Federal Republic. No data are available for the war years of 1944 and 1945. In contrast, the number of births in Germany was at its highest level in 2021 since 1997.
