- Number of people with a Blue Card increased more slowly during the Covid-19 pandemic
- Most Blue Card holders were from India
- Nearly three in ten highly qualified professionals with a Blue Card had studied at a higher education institution in Germany
WIESBADEN – During the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of highly qualified professionals with a Blue Card continued to rise in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), approximately 70,000 Blue Card holders were on the Central Register of Foreigners at the end of 2021, which is an increase of more than 6% on a year earlier. The number of highly qualified professionals with a Blue Card thus reached a new record high. However, the rate of increase slowed considerably compared with the years before the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019, the number of Blue Card holders had risen by as much as 20% and in 2020 by only 7%.
