WIESBADEN – The quantity of goods carried by inland water transport in Germany increased by 3.8% in 2021 from a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that a total of 195 million tonnes of goods were transported on German inland waterways. In 2020, 188 million tonnes of goods were transported. Despite the year-on-year increase, the transport volume in 2021 was 4.9% lower than in 2019, the year preceding the Covid-19 pandemic. In that year, 205 million tonnes of goods were carried by inland water transport.
