Press release No. 120 of 18 March 2022

  • Damaged timber at record high in 2020 - 60.1 million cubic metres logged
  • Especially conifers affected by weather and pests

WIESBADEN – The amount of timber logged in Germany because of forest damage was 60.1 million cubic metres in 2020, three fourths (75%) of the total volume of 80.4 million cubic metres. To coincide with the International Day of Forests on 21 March 2022, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that damaged timber had accounted for less than one fourth (23%) of the timber logged in 2017. Especially conifers suffered during the hot and dry summers of 2018 to 2020 with their difficult conditions. In fact, spruces, pines, firs, Douglas firs and other conifers accounted for just under 56.6 million cubic metres, or 94%, of the 60.1 million cubic metres of damaged timber logged.
