Press release No. 117 of 17 March 2022
WIESBADEN – According to provisional calculations, public budgets and the private sector spent a total of 334.1 billion euros on education, science and research in Germany in 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of 4.3 billion euros, or 1.3%, compared with the previous year. In 2020, the relevant expenditure accounted for 9.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP), following 9.5% in the preceding year. The higher proportion of GDP was due, on the one hand, to an increase in the expenditure on education, science and research and, on the other, to the decrease in GDP from 2019 to 2020 because of the pandemic.
