Press Smallest pig population in Germany in 25 years

Number of pig-keeping holdings down, too, but more pigs per holding

WIESBADEN – On the reference date of 3 November 2021, 23.6 million pigs were kept in Germany according to provisional results. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was the smallest pig population since 1996. Compared with the livestock survey (reference date 3 May 2021), the number of pigs decreased by 1,081,000 or 4.4%. Compared with the relevant number recorded on 3 November 2020, the pig population was down by 2,450,300 or 9.4%.
